My name is Mama Jessie Orume.
About five years ago, when I was living in Great Soppo, my life was turned upside down by the crisis. I lost both my younger brother and my elder sister, a heartbreak that is still fresh today. They each left behind three children, and suddenly, I found myself as the sole caregiver for six orphans.
These were not just any children; they had been living in the forest in Ekondo Titi to survive before my elderly mother, who is 70 years old, bravely brought them to me in Buea. With my own child and my mother, our small home was now a household of nine, with seven orphans to care for. We had nothing. I was desperate and did not know where to turn.
It was at this point, when I felt all hope was lost, that Caritas Buea came into my life. Their staff came to my home, listened to my story with compassion, and assessed our situation. They enlisted me as a beneficiary and gave me a beneficiary card, which was the first sign of hope we had in a long time.
They gave us a big mattress, a big mat, and a big blanket. This might seem like a simple thing, but for us, it was everything. It meant my children and my elderly mother no longer had to sleep on the cold floor. They also provided us with food and hygiene items, which took a heavy burden off my shoulders.
I can never thank Caritas enough. They did not just give me items; they gave me hope when I had none. Till today, the children still sleep on that same mattress, and each time I look at it, I remember the kindness of Caritas.
This incredible support would not be possible without the compassionate leadership of His Lordship, Bishop Michael Bibi, whose guidance makes this work possible. I want to extend my deepest thanks to the Director of Caritas Buea and to all the dedicated staff who are on the ground every day, finding people like me and changing our lives.
Thank you, Caritas. May God continue to bless the work of your hands.
