CARITAS of the Diocese of Buea launches a new project titled “Promoting Agroecology and Improving the Production and Income of Rural Households in Buea.” The initiative aims to sustainably improve livelihoods and strengthen the resilience of rural communities by encouraging the use of agroecological practices, boosting crop and livestock productivity, and promoting harmony with nature. A key component of the project also includes working with selected schools to instill ecological values in young learners through school gardening. As part of initial activities, the CARITAS team conducted a field visit to Catholic School Tole (St. Mary Nursery and Primary School) and Catholic School Muea (St. Andrew Nursery and Primary School) to present the project’s vision. Both the school authorities and the Parish Priest of Muea warmly welcomed the initiative. A needs assessment was also carried out to evaluate the potential of each site, with the school farm at Tole showing strong promise. While the heart of the project remains with rural farming households, supporting them to increase yields, diversify incomes, and build resilience. School involvement serves as a complementary effort to plant the seeds of sustainability in the next generation. By combining community action and youth engagement, CARITAS is building a holistic path toward lasting change. With positive responses from the schools and community actors, CARITAS is now preparing for full implementation of the project across multiple levels of society.
