As the world marks Mental Health Awareness Month 2025, CARITAS Diocese of Buea is shining a spotlight on one of the most overlooked consequences of Cameroon’s ongoing sociopolitical crisis, the mental and emotional toll on orphans and vulnerable children. Through its Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) program, CARITAS is offering not just material aid, but a critical lifeline of hope and healing to children scarred by trauma and loss.

In affected communities like Bomaka, Tole, Great Soppo, Bonalyse, Wututu, Livanda, Mile 2 Limbe , Sandpit, Mile 16, Muea, Mutengene, Muyuka, and Ekona, trained psychosocial volunteers are helping children process their pain through group counseling, play therapy, and safe emotional expression. Caregivers and community members are also receiving training to better understand trauma and offer supportive environments. Already, the initiative has reached over 1,000 children, many of whom are now showing signs of recovery, reconnecting with school, friends, and family life.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, CARITAS Buea reminds us that mental well-being is just as vital as food, water, and shelter. By investing in the emotional recovery of children today, we are building stronger, more resilient communities for tomorrow.
