The journey of CARITAS began in 1897 when Lorenz Werthmann founded the first Caritas organization in Germany, inspired by a deep commitment to love and compassion for those in need. The name “Caritas,” derived from the Latin word for charity, reflects the organization’s mission to provide aid to the most vulnerable. Over the years, this initiative has evolved into one of the largest aid and development agencies globally.

In the 20th century, Giovanni Battista Montini, who later became Pope Paul VI, significantly contributed to establishing an international network of Caritas organizations. His efforts led to the official recognition of Caritas Internationalis in 1954, aimed at assisting the Pope in his charitable efforts as the local bishop of Rome.

In Africa, CARITAS has made significant strides in addressing social issues such as poverty, health care, and education. CARITAS Africa supports local organizations in implementing sustainable development programs and responding to emergencies, enhancing their capacity to serve communities effectively.

In Cameroon, CARITAS operates as a national entity known as CARITAS Cameroon, officially recognized in 1960. This organization focuses on mobilizing resources and coordinating humanitarian efforts across the country, addressing issues related to food security, health care, education, and the empowerment of vulnerable populations.

In this spirit, CARITAS of the Diocese of Buea was established in August 2013 as a non-profit association linked to the local church. It serves as the charitable arm of the Diocese of Buea, supporting the bishop in carrying out his charitable works. CARITAS Buea operates under the guiding principles of the social doctrine of the Catholic Church and humanitarian principles, ensuring that its actions align with values of compassion, justice, and solidarity.

CARITAS of the Diocese of Buea has dedicated itself to improving the lives of the most vulnerable groups, including survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), women at risk, and marginalized individuals in the FAKO Division. Through various programs and initiatives, CARITAS Buea provides support, advocacy, and resources to empower these populations, fostering resilience and promoting social justice.

As CARITAS of the Diocese of Buea continues its mission, it remains committed to the values of compassion, solidarity, and service, striving to create a more just and equitable society for all.
