Empowering Women: A Success Story of Livelihood Support and GBV Mitigation Impact and Results:

Project with UNWomen

Under the compassionate leadership of Bishop Michael Bibi, Caritas Buea embarked on a life changing project aimed at empowering women and girls in the South West Region of Cameroon. Through their relentless efforts, the project successfully reduced the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) and provided livelihood opportunities to vulnerable women. The impact of this initiative has been transformative, empowering women to take charge of their lives and become active decision-makers in their communities.

Bishop Michael Bibi, a true advocate for gender equality and social justice, spearheaded the
implementation of this project. His unwavering commitment and guidance were instrumental in achieving remarkable results. Here are some of the key activities undertaken:

1. Livelihood Support and Cash for Work:
Caritas Buea organized cash-for-work activities, providing opportunities for 30
beneficiaries to engage in income-generating ventures such as provision stores, wood
selling, raw food selling, fruit businesses, cow skin business, and fish processing. This
not only improved their financial stability but also enhanced their self-esteem and
independence.
2. Vocational Training and Empowerment: Through the women empowerment center, Caritas Buea mobilized women and young girl mothers, offering training in functional literacy, numeracy, basic ICT skills, and raising awareness about available social services. Forty participants from each locality, including Idenau and Nguti, received training in domains such as hairdressing, tailoring, and business management. Their business plans were developed and supported for direct sponsorship, facilitating sustainable livelihoods

3. GBV Mitigation and Support:
Caritas Buea worked tirelessly to identify and assess GBV survivors and at-risk women
in Idenau and Nguti. Based on their needs, the project provided access to short-term
vocational training, temporary cash for work opportunities, and psychosocial support.
Additionally, women-centered agricultural activities were introduced, including vertical
and integrated agriculture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture, ensuring their economic
empowerment and food security.

Conclusion:
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Bishop Michael Bibi and the entire Caritas Buea team, the project witnessed significant success in reducing the risk of GBV and empowering women through livelihood support. By providing training, cash for work opportunities, and essential resources, vulnerable women have gained the confidence and skills necessary to thrive in their communities. This success story stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the transformative impact of empowering women.
