Transforming Lives: Caritas’ Cholera Response Project in Cameroon

Caritas of the Diocese of Buea, under the inspiring leadership of His Lordship Michael M. Bibi, spearheaded a remarkable project that brought about positive change in the fight against cholera in Fako-Idenau in 2022. Through their dedicated efforts, the project achieved significant impact and yielded remarkable results, transforming the lives of vulnerable communities.

Caritas, in collaboration with CRS (Catholic Relief Services), implemented a comprehensive cholera response project. The project involved the construction of a borehole to provide safe drinking water access, distribution of essential Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Non-Food Items (NFIs), and extensive hygiene promotion campaigns. These initiatives aimed to ensure the adoption of proper hygiene practices, safe water storage, and the prevention of cholera outbreaks.

Bishop Michael Bibi played a pivotal role in leading and guiding the project. His visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to serve the community were instrumental in driving the project’s success. Under his guidance, Caritas of the Diocese of Buea effectively coordinated with CRS and local stakeholders, ensuring a holistic and impactful response to the cholera outbreak.

The project targeted 100 households, benefiting approximately 700 individuals, and made a lasting difference in their lives. Through the distribution of buckets with lids and soap, alongside intensive hygiene promotion campaigns, the project empowered communities to adopt safe hygiene practices. Additionally, the construction of a borehole provided a sustainable source of safe drinking water, addressing a critical need in the region.

The success of this project is evident in the remarkable achievements. Hygiene promotion efforts reached 93% of the targeted population, enhancing knowledge about critical times for handwashing and safe drinking water storage. Furthermore, 99% of households expressed satisfaction with the WASH NFIs received, highlighting the project’s effectiveness in meeting their needs.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Caritas of the Diocese of Buea, supported by Bishop Michael Bibi’s leadership, vulnerable communities in Idenau now have improved access to safe water, better hygiene practices, and increased resilience against cholera outbreaks. This success story is a testament to the transformative impact that can be achieved through collaboration, dedication, and compassionate leadership.

Together, we can continue to make a difference and create a healthier, safer future for all.
